On Tuesday, The New York Times gave readers an early glance at the film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road (Vintage TP 9780307387899 $14.95). Viggo Mortensen plays the father, so at least surviving the apocalypse will be easy on the eyes.

The film is scheduled to open in late November of this year, getting the holiday season off to a real bummer of a start. That said, this couldn’t possibly be more soul-crushing than Billy Bob Thorton’s adaptation of All The Pretty Horses.

than repackaging old material with a smidgen of new stuff that they’re going to buy anyway when it comes out. Stephanie Meyer, the seemingly unstoppable juggernaut of YA paranormal romance, will be releasing Eclipse: Special Edition this Saturday. Customers who buy it will get: a sneak peek at Breaking Dawn (the next book in the series), a limited edition print (how many copies is LB printing?), and two iron-on transfers (how many washings will these suckers endure?).

You’ll be glad to have a few copies on hand for the die-hards, but the smart kids will probably be downloading the early Breaking Dawn material by the time you have lunch on Saturday. On the other hand, these kids are fiercely loyal. It seems that paranormal romance has learned a lesson from big tobacco: get ‘em while they’re young.

And, for the male perspective, there is It’s Only Temporary (Riverhead HC 9781594489952 $24.95), a memoir by Evan Handler, the actor who plays Charlotte’s lovable schlub of a husband Harry. His earlier book Time on Fire: My Comedy of Terrors, which chronicled his bout with leukemia, was very well received, but currently out of print. This time out, he’s exploring the nature of relationships, which should play nicely with the crowds waiting to see S&TC this weekend.
